Befriending your Dragons

And, what, you ask are
dragons, are they your past or
personal battles? Could they
be life’s challenges? I
believe, metaphorically, they
are all of these things. Do they

represent an ongoing problem for
us, these dragons? I think they
can and do for many
people. Their resurfacing
makes moving on difficult,
perhaps, impossible. Their

presence keeps us
dwelling in the past,
reliving challenges, dueling
invisible foes, fixating on
conquering our failures and
weaknesses. Shouldn’t we just

befriend these beasts,
coexist with our tales of
disaster and ruin, take
time to understand why we
are haunted, why we are
battle scarred? Can we

extend a hand to our
past selves, a gesture of
healing, forgiveness, for our
inability to have succeeded, or
become who we thought we
would be? Will we move past

regret to a place where we
feel safe enough to exist
alongside our images of
devastation and debris? We must
embrace our dragons, and
release the guilt, anger and

sorrow that we all carry, to
befriend our monsters, and
step into the light of the
world.

  1. I have a 90 year old friend now in the hospital with pneumonia. She said she does not look back or have many, if any, regrets. It may be a healthy way to approach sorrow, After all, we cannot change the past. Your poem was powerful and well thought out. It certainly hit home! Congratulations!
