Gypsy Soul
Have I always had this
sad heart, this
defect of melancholy,
keeping a grip on me
decades out, holding my soul
hostage? The why of it
shuttered away, perhaps the
bullying, the scorn of peers,
vicious attacks, aimed at
pulling hurtful phrases from my
lips. They did not, I
raged at that, though it
did me no good. Still, I
survived, a 700-mile move
rescuing me from that
ongoing fate. Eventually,
self-esteem surfacing,
taking many years to get a
foothold. Have I always
presumed myself to be
doomed? A romantic heroine
rescued from her tormentors
only to die in some tragic
mishap, while the love of my
life embraces me to the
end? I am no storybook
princess, I have the
genealogy to prove it. I
confront my reality and
try to come to terms with a
braver heart, however scarred, it
is mine, it is my life, my
path. I vow to accept my flaws, my
existence. I have a gypsy
soul, I will let my
colors shine, my freak flag
fly, and move forward,
cherishing what I now
know. I will be
unapologetically me.
